TheTVObserver: Supernatural

In a brand new series by TheTVObserver titled OnTheProgram, we look at Supernatural, TheCW’s original series starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.

Very few shows premiere with viewer appreciation and as much loyalty as Supernatural has had from its fans across the world. I think casting Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Dean and Sam Winchester, was a stroke of excellence which has ensured success for the paranormal show.

With every season, I keep wondering what could possibly happen which will render this show a dead horse, but then I realize that its premise is designed much like a soap in that anyone can die and be brought back. However it takes a good writing team to function within that world and never bore viewers to death. The use of visual effects, especially in this generation of digital technology, has helped in turning the show into a cult favorite.

Jensen Ackles is my favorite actor on the series and although Jared is dear to my heart, I can safely say Jensen occupies a considerable piece of it. L.O.L

The two actors are cast as brothers who travel the country fighting demand and dealing all sorts of other issues which keep the story exciting, but it’s the relationship between the brothers which yields the most entertainment and the cherry on top is killing a couple demons. All in a days work and off to another city.

Supernatural is watched in over 60 countries and now in its fourth season, the series is still a top show to watch on television, DVD and online.

The series is a Warner Bros. Television Production Inc., in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision. Executive produced by McG and Peter Johnson with writer/executive producer/creator Eric Kripke and director/executive producer David Nutter. It is reported that the pilot was filmed in California, with principal filming in Vancouver, British Columbia and post production work takes place in California.

Everything with Joseph "McG" McGinty’s name to it, I am there with my remote and screen. I have enjoyed every series he has produced including my all time favorite Fastlane, which was eventually canceled but is now available on home video. Could there be anything better than Fastlane? It was awesome. He also serves as executive producer on The Mountain, The O.C., the Pussycat Dolls Present: series, Supernatural, and Chuck.

I call the Impala a cast member since its in every episode of the show and to me, it has become a “Star” of the show, as well. Should they decide to auction it off, it will be sold to the highest bidder and I think it will fetch good money. It is the Winchestermobile, after all. The trademark black 1967 Chevrolet Impala was passed down to him by his father, who bought it in 1973 after Dean, sent back in time by Castiel, convinced him to purchase it over a 1964 VW Van in the episode "In the Beginning".

The car is Dean's most prized possession, and he protects it with nearly the same ferocity with which he protects his family. Despite this, however, he attacks the car's rear with a crowbar after a talk with Sam in the episode "Everybody Loves A Clown" due to the pressure from his dying father's secret about Sam. In the pilot episode, the trunk is revealed to hold various weaponry to fight the supernatural.

In Episode #1

• Jensen Ackles cited this episode as his favorite in the premier issue of the Official Supernatural Magazine saying: "I mean, obviously the pilot stands out among all the rest."
• Sam's LSAT (Law School Admission Test) score was 174.
• At 19:06 the background visible from both Sam and Dean's windows is that of flat land, as far as the eye could see. Yet a second later when they pull over, there is a large slope next to the road, that is thickly covered in trees.
• In the scene where Sam and Dean are chased by the Impala when they jump off the bridge it clearly shows both Sam and Dean falling past the railing, but in the next shot it shows Sam hanging on the rail and Dean in the water.
• Although Constance Welch leapt off the bridge on 4/25/1981, when Dean and Sam bring up a website with the information, the URL says "Archive/04-25-1971/", which is off by a decade.

Supernatural does not have an opening credit sequence or theme music, but instead only a title card, generally following a brief recap of previous episodes and the current episode's opening scene. A "previously" sequence before each episode highlights a montage of past events. This may be scored to a classic rock song, particularly when the episode is important to the story arc
